The primary purpose of companies that begin to use Big Data is to achieve better decision making . It is one of the main conclusions of the 'Big Data in numbers 2014' study carried out by the Online Business School (OBS), a numerical, statistical and usability analysis of the data management area. 78% of the companies that participated in the study get the most out of big data management in the area of strategic decision making . The marketing and communication department also benefits from this type of technology, with 73% affirmative responses. A little further away, the areas of IT, product development and customer services are around 62%, with Business Intelligence being applied by more than half of companies. On the other hand, one of the surprises is the underuse of business intelligence in the area of human resources , where only 43% of the companies studied by OBS apply it.
The sectors that have made the greatest investment in Big Data technologies are commerce, industry, health, information and communications, banking and the financial sector, insurance and public administration. Investment in business intelligence services is expected to be around €96 billion worldwide in 2015. The majority of this investment, according to the study, would be made by small and medium-sized companies: the global estimate for this type of company is close to 58 billion euros.
